Animals and humans are anatomically very similar. Certain commercial medications a affective for veterinary use, but are unavailable in the small doses required for animals. Common household pets have less body mass than humans, and require a small dose.
Pets can be extremely difficult to medicate. Some medications are very bitter and unpalatable in commercial dosage forms. Compounded veterinary medications can be flavored, and formulated into suspension and pet treats to mask the bitterness and increase compliance for animals.
